Compliance
TEMA Standards.
The Tubular Exchanger Manufacturers Association (TEMA) Standards describe the classes, the types, and the construction of shell-and-tube exchangers. PlutoHX follows them in each design.
What PlutoHX follows
Construction to TEMA.
- Follows the TEMA standard clearances, baffle arrangements, and floating head designs
- Supports Class R (petroleum and related processing), Class C (commercial and general process) and Class B (chemical process)
- Supports the standard shell types and the front and rear head configurations
Classes and types
The classes, and every type letter.
An exchanger’s type is three letters: its front end, its shell, and its rear end.
Petroleum and related processing
Commercial and general process
Chemical process
Front end
- AChannel and removable cover (the reference exchanger)
- BBonnet (integral cover)
- CChannel integral with tubesheet, removable cover (removable bundle)
- NChannel integral with tubesheet, removable cover (fixed tubesheet)
- DSpecial high pressure closure
Shell
- EOne pass (the reference exchanger)
- FTwo pass, with longitudinal baffle
- GSplit flow
- HDouble split flow
- JDivided flow
- KKettle reboiler
- XCross flow
Rear end
- L, M, NFixed tubesheet, like the A, B and N front ends
- POutside packed floating head
- SFloating head with backing device
- TPull-through floating head (the reference exchanger)
- UU-tube bundle
- WExternally sealed floating tubesheet
The reference exchanger is type AET.
A construction detail
Pass partition plates.
In a channel with more than one pass, a pass partition plate divides the tube side flow. TEMA asks that it carries the pressure difference between the adjacent passes, and PlutoHX designs it for that.

In a design
Where the class and the type are set.
The TEMA class and the TEMA type are part of the general options of every design, beside the exchanger type and the shell type. When a datasheet is parsed, they are imported with the rest of the data: the class, and the letters of the channel, the shell, and the rear head.
Coming Winter 2026
We would be glad to show you PlutoHX.
PlutoHX launches at the end of this year. A live demo shows how it fits the way your team works.
